Agatha happened to be coming out of the kitchen right then with a plate of cut fruit. 55 Finished i "Yeah." Cassiel said it without thinking, already halfway to the stairs, when Agatha said, puzzled, "Seren left a while ago, though." Cassiel stopped, turned around. "Went somewhere fun?" Xander took the fruit plate from Agatha and snagged a chunk of watermelon, bright red, perfectly crisp, practically dripping.

He asked, mouth full, "When's she getting back?" Agatha thought about it. "A week or two, I think? She didn't say exactly." The second the words left her mouth, both boys' heads snapped toward her. Their expressions were competing for who could look more devastated. Cassiel's mouth curled into a smile that looked more like a grimace. "A week or two?" Xander swallowed hard, dazed. A few seconds later, he gently guided her head to rest against his shoulder instead. - The weight that settled there was feather-light, like snowfall and somehow, at the same time, heavy as the whole universe. She must have been completely worn out, because even in that awkward position, Seren slept a long, deep sleep. When she woke up, the two girls in the row ahead were huddled together, laughing about something. Seren surfaced groggy, blinking slowly, her vision still hazy. Hearing came back first. Then sight. Last of all, smell and touch.
