"If you visited your mother more often, ungrateful son, I wouldn't miss you this much." Alistair gave a sheepish laugh. "The company's been really busy lately." "Just excuses." Wendy said. Alistair turned to grab the holiday gifts from the trunk.

Wendy's expression cooled, watching her eldest son's family. Five of them clustered around the trunk, laughing about something. Thinking of Alistair's "company's been busy" line, she sighed. Her husband's health had been getting worse this past year, and he was well past the age most people retired. The plan had always been for their eldest son to take over the company, but he'd rarely bothered with company matters these past years, leaving most of the work to their younger son. By now, a portion of the board even supported the younger son taking over.

Once her husband stepped down, the two brothers were bound to end up competing for control. They were both her sons. No matter what happened, she couldn't bring herself to choose between them. And she had no way of stopping it either. Her younger son might not have originally intended to compete with his brother, but years of power had changed him, and he'd developed ambitions of his own.
