hapter 228 A Room Full of Snakes The basement was too quiet. Colette could hear the ragged sound of her own breathing loud in her ears. She was just an ordinary student in real life-where would she have ever seen a sight like this? Sheer terror raised goosebumps across every inch of her skin. She gasped, panting, and couldn't force herself to take another step forward. Tap. Tap. Tap. Someone walked toward her slowly from inside the room, dress shoes squelching with something wet and foul-smelling, the sound sharp against the floor.

Griffin was dressed the same as earlier-a black silk shirt hanging loose and open, and though he looked younger than most men his age, his broad shoulders and narrow waist stood out, his rolled-up sleeves tracing an arm cut with sharp, defined muscle. He finally stopped in front of Colette, bent slightly, looking down at her from above, his bloodless lips curving. "My dear... daughter?" His tone dripped mockery. "Why are you this scared? Want me to help you up?" Griffin's voice went gentle, almost tender, the way you'd coax a lover.

He crouched down, and the snake coiled around his arm-thick as a baby's arm, its scales a riot of color, its smell sharp and foul-came right up in front of Colette's face. "Hisss..." "AAAH-" Colette recoiled like she'd seen a ghost, rolling backward. "Stay away from me!" Every member of the estate's staff knew their employer was unpredictable, and even his pets were unsettling. This basement especially-it was practically a snake den. And not the harmless, decorative kind, either-every single one venomous, each more vividly colored than the last. - Griffin tilted his head, feigning regret.

"That old man Wells told me to spend some time bonding with you, so I brought you down here specially to meet my babies. Are you saying... you don't want to bond with me?" Colette was crying so hard she could barely breathe. "I'm scared..." she choked out. "I'm really scared, please..." 1/3 15:13 Wed, Sep 30 Chapter 228 A Room Full of Snakes 48 Finished Griffin stroked his pet affectionately. "Oh no, sweetheart. Looks like you've been rejected..." His tone was even gentler now than when he'd been talking to Colette a second ago.

Colette watched, horrified, as he frowned and cooed at the snake like it was an infant. This man is a complete lunatic. She stood frozen, terrified, not daring to move, pressed against the wall, breathing hard. The basement was so silent she could hear her own heart pounding, faster and harder with every beat. A flicker of regret surfaced in her. Did I mess this up? But the lie had already been told-there was no turning back now. She'd just have to grit her teeth and see it through.
