Chapter 21 Jul 24, 2025 At the dais, Elowen stood tall beneath the arch of flame-carved stone, every thread of her violet robe arranged to perfection, every pin in her hair weighed with symbolism. The crown was not yet iron, but it blazed all the same - a circlet of Halden's royal fire, shaped in ancient symbols, resting on her brow like a warning too loud to ignore.

She looked down at the kneeling court, her hands clenched beneath the folds of her sleeves, the weight of ceremony pressing harder than the metal on her head. They knelt because they had to. But some rose too quickly, like the floor itself burned them. Some avoided her eyes altogether, unable or unwilling to meet the gaze of the girl they once called nothing. And many murmured beneath their breath as they returned to their seats, their voices soft as fog but laced with steel.

They smiled sideways-tight, sharp smiles made not of joy but calculation. "She's not even wed," Lord Harwin whispered to his cousin as they stepped from the hall toward the council wing, their robes brushing together like the slither of snakes. "A crown without a consort is a blade without a sheath." "She holds that blade too close," the cousin replied, his voice low and amused. "One day, it will cut her.

Maybe sooner than she thinks." Later, in the narrow chamber off the western wing, the air was cooler. The fire here burned smaller, contained, but the words thrown around it were not. This was not a hall for spectacle-this was where power turned quiet and cruel. Queen Eirwen sat beside the king's chair, her posture elegant, her fingers folded like a statue carved for war. Her face was unreadable, but her tone edged with iron. "You wear the title now," she said to Elowen, her gaze level.

"But what you do next will determine if they let you keep it." Elowen didn't flinch. Her arms folded across her chest like armor. "Let me?" she asked, lifting one brow. The word left a bitter taste. "You may command respect," Eirwen said, "but you haven't secured obedience." Elowen's voice darkened. "And that comes with a ring?" She let out a short laugh that held no amusement. "You want to marry me off like a ribbon on a scroll." Eirwen did not blink.
