23 1inwanted Visitor 23: Unwanted Visitor I pushed my eggs around on the plate, my appetite gone. The food smelled incredible, but my stomach twisted too tightly to enjoy any of it. Betty's words kept circling in my head like a flock of vultures. Pitiful. He'll get bored of you fast. I stabbed a grape so hard the juice burst out, staining my fingertip purple. Was she right? I had nothing a woman like Heather had. She was tall, curvy, beautiful, raised with the confidence of someone who knew she was wanted. Me? I was... small. Quiet. A servant.

And even though Conan said he'd never hurt me, the truth was he could destroy me with a single careless word. "Why aren't you eating?" I froze. His voice was deep, smooth, and far too close. Conan slid into the chair beside me instead of across, his presence so large it made the space feel smaller His scent reminded me of cedar and smoke and it wrapped around me, steadying me and undoing me at the same time. "I... I'm not that hungry." He tilted his head, studying me like he could read every secret stamped across my skin.

"You're thinking too much again, Princess." "I am not." His lips curved in that devastating half-smirk. "You are. Your eyes go all distant, like you're wandering off somewhere I can't follow. And I don't like that." I blinked at him. "Why not?" "Because I want you here. With me." My heart somersaulted so hard I almost dropped my fork. He reached out and tucked a loose curl behind my ear. "Do you know how much I wanted to wake you up this morning?" My lips parted. "Y-you did?" He chuckled low, the sound vibrating through me. "You were curled up like a kitten in that bed across from mine.

So soft. So peaceful. I almost didn't want to move you last night when you fell asleep in the waiting room." "Oh." My face burned. "I'm sorry you had to carry me." "I'm not." His eyes glinted with something unreadable. "And you fit in my arms like you belonged there." I stared down at my plate, my wolf practically purring under my skin. "You shouldn't say things like that." "Why not?" His voice was teasing, but there was an edge of command beneath it. "Does it scare you?" I shook my head quickly. "No... it just... it makes me feel..." "Seen?" he offered. I nodded, not trusting my voice.

Conan leaned closer, his breath brushing my ear. "Good. Because I see you, Asia. Every inch of you. And nothing about you is pitiful." The words sliced through Betty's poison like sunlight through fog. I dared a glance at him, and his eyes were warm and steady. It was so at odds with the beast who had nearly crushed Beck' s throat minutes ago. This was the side of Conan no one else seemed to get. And he was giving it to me. I swallowed hard, pushing my plate away. "You're confusing," I whispered. "Am I?" He sat back, amused. "I thought I was being perfectly clear." Then he winked.
