Chapter 2 Chapter 2 "Asher!" I shot awake and realized I was already back home, trying to sit up. Strong hands pushed me back down onto the bed. I looked up into Cade's deep eyes. He sat by my bed, exhaustion showing beneath his gaze. "Where's my brother?" I grabbed his wrist, my voice shaking uncontrollably. "What did you do to Asher? TELL ME!" Cade frowned and pried my fingers off, his tone flat. "You were unconscious for a day. You didn't decide, so I chose for you.

The baby." "If Brielle hadn't begged me to go easy on him, Asher would've lost both hands." "WHAT?!" I stared at him like he'd just gutted me, screaming in rage, "Cade Aldridge, YOU ANIMAL!" I tried to get out of bed, desperate to reach my brother, but he held me down firmly. "You just gave birth. You can't move! Avery, it's done. Throwing a fit won't change anything. Take care of yourself." "LET GO OF ME!" I screamed like a cornered animal. "That's my brother! My only family! What gives you the right to decide for me?

What gives you the right to break his hand?" "Cade Aldridge, I'LL KILL YOU! I SWEAR I'LL KILL YOU!" The hospital room door slammed open with a bang. Brielle strutted in carrying a thermos, walked straight to the window, and hurled the scalding chicken soup out. Chapter 2 "Ungrateful bitch! Look at yourself-you think you're good enough for OUR family soup?" She turned, her face twisted in disgust. "Your parents died young, so nobody taught you gratitude, right?" "My brother treats you like a queen, and you dare blame him for disciplining your trashy brother?" "Should've crippled him for good.

Would've saved everyone the headache." Brielle pulled out her phone and slammed it onto my bed. The screen lit up automatically, showing video of Asher being beaten on the ground. Guards swung wooden bats at his hands. The crack of breaking bones was so loud I could hear it through the phone. My brother curled on the ground, screaming in agony, hoarsely crying out for my name... Rage exploded inside me. I shoved Cade away with every ounce of strength I had. Caught off guard, he stumbled back and hit the wall. I didn't look back. Didn't spare him a glance.

I ran like a madwoman toward the hospital entrance, desperate to find my injured brother. The moment I burst outside, I froze. My blood turned to ice. At the bottom of the hospital steps, my brother lay curled on the ground, his left hand hanging uselessly, blood soaking through his clothes. His face was ghostly pale, his brow furrowed tight. Yet he still murmured weakly: "Sis... my hand..." I stumbled forward, my voice breaking: "Asher, I'm here! I'll get you help!" One hand clutched my agonizing abdomen while the other looped under my brother's arm, half-dragging. half-carrying him.
