Chapter 19 Soren's POV A friend asked why I didn't interfere when Paxton started dating. I just smiled. "Interfere with what? It's just dating. Not like they're getting married." I heard they'd been together three years. Pretty long. Probably the longest Paxton's ever committed to anything. But that girl's family wasn't well-off. My friend said: "Dude, he's graduating soon. They're gonna move in together. And then-boom. Baby. You're 32, man. Congrats, Grandpa." It was a joke, but it made me seriously think about it for the first time. Dating's fine. But if there's actually a kid?

That's a big deal. I called Paxton in and warned him. "I heard that girl's family isn't doing well. Marrying down is complicated. Have you really thought this through?" He thought for a moment and asked: "Dad, you don't like her?" Hm? I've never even met her. How can I like or dislike her? "Why don't you like her? Because her family's poor?" Paxton volunteered to prove to me that he and this girl could make it work. His proof? Interning at my company for a month and showing me results. If he did well, I'd approve of them being together.

I told him one month wasn't even enough to learn the basics-he should try three months. He said no. One month. That's it. Turns out, within that month, he was either late, leaving early, or arguing with his manager. Didn't wanna do anything. Quit after less than two weeks. Then came running into my office looking devastated. "Dad. I give up. Stop pushing me. I'll break up with her." Chapter 19 Friends told me not to push him too hard. Said it's a free country, people can date who they want-if I pushed too hard he'd jump off a building or something.

I heard it so much I started wondering if I was being too harsh. Then, two days after the breakup, he came running back all excited saying he had a new girlfriend. "Dad, you wanted someone from the right background. Are you happy now?" I wasn't happy. I'd never even met his last girlfriend. My friend joked: "He just dropped that girl like it was nothing?" "Soren, breaking up a couple like that-you're not scared of karma?" I didn't care. Please. I'm a businessman. Ruthless, profit-driven. Karma? What's that? Turns out, karma came for me pretty fast. I caught the flu. Pretty bad.

When sickness hits, it hits hard. I was stuck in bed for days. I thought THAT was my karma. Turns out I underestimated the universe. Right after I recovered, I went to a business dinner. The guy I was dealing with was a pain. We went back and forth all night, couldn't close the deal. He wanted me to drop my rate by another 3%. Not happening. When I got home, I felt dizzy, my chest was tight, my whole body was burning up. That's when I realized I'd been drugged. I tried calling my assistant-line was busy. Tried calling my driver-line was busy.
