Chapter 14 Elara's POV 'Three days after the banquet, my father insisted that I attend my first official charity gala as a Frost. Apparently, disappearing for fifteen years and suddenly returning wasn't enough. The city now wanted interviews, photographs, business appearances, and endless public events. Twas beginning to understand why my brother complained so much. "T still think I should be allowed to fake a fever." 'My father looked unimpressed. "You are twenty-five years old." "Exactly. That's old enough to decide I don't want to attend." My brother laughed from across the room.

"You say that now, but wait until everyone starts praising you." Inarrowed my eyes. "Traitor." He grinned. "I learned from the best." My father looked pleased with himself. 'An hour later, I found myself standing inside one of the largest hotels in the city. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead while guests filled the ballroom. Cameras flashed constantly as reporters documented every moment of the event. 'The moment I entered, conversations shifted. People smiled, business executives greeted me, and socialites approached me. Even politicians seemed eager to introduce themselves. It was strange.

Only a few weeks ago, these same people would have ignored me completely, but now they practically tripped over themselves trying to get my attention. Money really did change everything or perhaps status did. Either way, I found it exhausting. Twas speaking with several charity organizers when movement near the entrance caught my attention. 'The atmosphere shifted immediately as whispers spread through the crowd. 1 followed everyone's gaze then sighed. It was Lilith.

She stood near the entrance wearing an expensive red dress and an expression that immediately told me she wasn't here for charitable donations. She was here for trouble. I considered walking away. Unfortunately, Lilith spotted me. Her eyes immediately sharpened and she began walking toward me. Several nearby guests fell silent. Everyone could sense the tension. Lilith stopped directly in front of me. For a few seconds, neither of us spoke, then she smiled. Unfortunately for her, it wasn't convincing. "Must be nice," she said. I blinked.

"What?" "Going from orphan to heiress overnight." Several nearby guests exchanged uncomfortable glances. I simply sipped my champagne. "Oh. You're still upset it's not you," I said. Her smile twitched. "I just find it interesting." Tnodded thoughtfully. "I find a lot of things interesting too." Her expression darkened. "Like what?" I smiled. "Like how someone can spend three years chasing another woman's husband and still think she's the victim." 'The crowd immediately became very interested in our conversation. Lilith's face tightened. "You trapped Karl." Inearly laughed.
