It was only then that Belinda seemed to awaken from her detachment, her eyes finally settling on Donovan’s bloodied visage. Rising slowly, she approached Dashawn and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. “That’s enough,” she said quietly.

Despite Joyce’s earlier attempts, Dashawn had persisted. Yet, at Belinda’s soft-spoken words, he halted abruptly, turning to face her.

She extended a pack of tissues towards him. “Clean your face, Dashawn. You’re covered in sweat and blood. It doesn’t suit you.” Dashawn, his vision blurred by the blood splattered from his assault on Donovan, momentarily saw the image of Hattie in Belinda’s features.

“Hattie,” he murmured, reaching out to touch her cheek, inadvertently smearing blood across her clean skin.

Belinda smiled gently, patting his hand. “I’m here,” she assured him, her voice steady.
